What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP or 5-hydroxytryptophan is a chemical byproduct of the amino acid L-tryptophan, typically found in common household ingredients such as milk, potatoes, pumpkin, sunflower seeds or chicken. For commercial production the plant griffonia simplicifolia is used for 5-HTP extraction due to its high concentration in this plant. In the central nervous system 5-HTP increases the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin.
Serotonin carries messages between nerve cells in your central nervous system (brain) and throughout your peripheral nervous system (body). Essentially these chemical messages tell the parts of your body how to work. An imbalance of Serotonin therefore leads directly impact mood, alertness, energy and sexual behaviour
5-HTP used to be prescribed to patients suffering from anxiety, mood swings, depression and even aggression. Meanwhile other and more advanced drugs for depression were released where a prescription is necessary. Therefore 5-HTP is now considered a dietary supplement for which you do not need a prescription in most countries.
A healthy amount of 5-HTP can curb your appetite, which is why some people use it to reduce obesity. Furthermore, 5-HTP can be tried to alleviate sleep disorders, hot flashes, migraine or fibromyalgia (functional pain syndrome), especially in people who are in menopause, although there is not sufficient research that underlines theses statements..
