How does Phenibut work?
Phenibut mimics GABAB and to a lesser extend GABAA receptors. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter widely distributed among the central nervous system and plays a major role in almost all brain functions. The highest concentrations of GABA are found in the limbic system, the part of the brain that generates personal feelings and stores emotional memories. Thus Phenibut leads to a quicker and more abundant GABA uptake and therefore intensifying cognitive, intellectual and memory functions.
Phenibut is known to activate the dopamine metabolism. Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter that helps to regulate movement, attention, learning, and emotional response, especially for the motivational component of reward-motivated behavior. Dopamine metabolism itself is strongly linked to oxidative stress, an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body that can either benefit or harm fatty tissues, DNA or proteins in your body. If free radicals outnumber antioxidants by large amounts over a long period of time the body can develop a number of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases or cancer.
Where does Phenibut originate from?
Phenibut was first synthesized 1963 in the Soviet Union by the organic chemist Vsevolod Perekalin at Herzen University, serving as an experimental drug to treat psychiatric children. In 1975, after calmative effects of Phenibut were confirmed, it was eventually publically used and was even mandated to astronauts due to its calming effects while enhancing cognitive functionality.
What did studies about Phenibut conclude?
Numerous clinical studies on Phenibut were carried out in vitro, on animals and on humans. The studies focused primarily on Phenibut's effectiveness on cognitive functions, reflexes, intelligence and tranquilizing effects.
The dark chamber test on mice revealed that mice that were given Phenibut entered the dark chamber within ⅓ of the time compared to control mice. The time spent in the dark chamber was reduced by half compared to control mice, suggesting that Phenibut improves conditional reflexes and cognitive functions.
Tests on anxious and stress fulness passive cats revealed that Phenibut was able to reduce fearfulness and helped the cats escape faster from stressful situations. [2]
